Subject: Token-Ring Twisted Pair Must Have Six Twists per Foot
Date: December 14, 1990
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
PROBLEM: A customer was using IBM Token-Ring and Proteon wire centers
with twisted pair. When he would add a workstation to the
ring (making it an even number of workstations), the other
workstations would get slow response from the file server or
would loose connection to the network.
SOLUTION: Token-Ring must have six or more twists per foot for the
twisted pair wire. They found out that the wire between
workstations and wire centers had only two twists per foot.
They replaced the cable and the network now works fine.
This points out something. Not every brand of cable that
says it is IBM type 1, 2, or 3 is truly compatible. IBM has
some very stringent specifications and the AT&T premis
distribution specifications for type 3 are even more
stringent.
